How ?
Speeding of protons is done by a machine called a synchrotron . A massive high energy is created by the high speed of the protons . Why ?
- In standard radiation therapy, hits the cancer cells that it targets, but it also affects the nearby tissues. But, it will not happen in proton therapy.
- Proton therapy has very fewer side effects when compared standard radiation therapy.
- There is chance of secondary cancer in the traditional radiation therapy but, there is no chance in the proton cancer treatment.
- This treatment can even cure sensitive parts such as brain, spinal cord and eye.
- This radiation is a kind of targeted approach and there is a very very little chance of affecting the tissues around the cancer.
Some Side Effects
- Proton therapy centers are very few in number.
- It costs higher than the ordinary radiation therapy.
- Not all cancers are treated with the radiation therapy.
